Interview - Passion and Deceit: Innocent by Sea Hardt

What inspired you to become an author?

I have always loved expressing myself. Whether it be through my art, my singing in the shower much to my families horror or simply having a good chin wag at any given chance that I am given. To add to the equation is that I have a very fertile mind when it comes to creativity and I am always conjuring all kinds of scenarios in my mind about a number of topics. The process of writing was yet another way of expressing thoughts where colors and brush strokes are replaced with words accompanied by the careful construction of a good story. For me, writing is the culmination of all that I love; expression of my thoughts and feelings, creativity, logistics and lots of chocolate to fuel me on.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

We are in many ways driven by our desires and passions. This is what makes me get out of bed in the morning, that yet intangible promise of something that is within reach but I have to work for. For most of us anyway, it is either a wish or a passion. As for the ‘Deceit’ word I believe this is what we do on a daily basis, this is the game we all play, hiding and revealing our emotions all the time. The title, Passion and Deceit is what defines most of our relationships to each other and more so with the sexual encounters in our life’s that are turned up a few more notches.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Like my not conforming spirit, I like my expression to sometimes not have a particular aim. I love the unknown and hence I have an affinity for doing thinks on the spur of the moment. I loosely think of a title sometimes but what gives me story direction is how I generally feel and adventures I would love to embark on. Whether it be a casual hook-up or getting lost in the dramas of every day life. No, I have no rule that says I must first think of the title then the story or even vice versa. I just let my heart push the pen across the page.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

I love to write from a holistic approach. Cutting straight to the point is that we are all interlinked and ones pain is everyone else’s. If someone I know is having problems, then I too will be affected even if I ignore it, inevitability I too will suffer from her pain. Yes I believe in Karma, so I do good at every chance that fate gives me. But for me it is much more then doing good so that I reap a reward. It is simply all about love. Love for yourself is to love others. Love for others is to love yourself. Whether someone feels the same towards you should simply be of no concern to you directly. To conclude my garage philosophies, although I write about all kinds of erotica, at the end of the day, you simply need to love and respect everything in life. In the case of the story, ‘Passion and Deceit’, one needs to wait for the end of the book to understand the repercussions of a superficial lifestyle.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

I cannot imagine not relating to my own life and that of other people to compose such a story. The book is a construction of a myriad of events of that of my own and other peoples past experiences. One cannot write about something that they have not lived or somehow experienced themselves. However to answer the burning question whether if a certain character has any parallels to my own character; I can only say that it perhaps reflects who I used to be and no longer am.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

I used Mario Madureira, a very good designer that immediately understood and expressed what I was trying to get across. I needed something with aggression and did not mince the words of the title. I wanted it carnal in its intensity hence the probing hands all over the amazing body. The red coming from the bottom is part of my brand and speaks of our burning passion that we occasionally come across in our life that we cannot resist but reach out to. The title made big and strong were aimed to be memorable. Loved the font and its intensity. The splash of electric blue is the streak of color that to me breaks through like lightning in the sky on a dark cold rainy night.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

While writing I always have background music. Good deep blues with artists such as BB King and John Lee Hooker are common visitors to my playlist. It is such heartfelt forms of expression that it resonates most times with me. Otherwise, if I have to think of a soundtrack to my writing, Sade and Beth Hart are my first choices hands down. These artists life and experiences come through so strongly in their music and for me, it is easy to adapt their style and essence into my books.

Just for fun, if you could have one paranormal ability, what would it be?

So often I wonder what life is like through other people. What they see and experience. The good and the bad of their life’s. Their interactions with their partners and how they see the world. I am forever curious about what makes people tick. I guess if I was a character like Casper the ghost or perhaps having the ability to metamorphose myself into different shapes like their dog or maybe their husband or wife would be amazing abilities to have. I know it super intrusive but what fun would that be?

What inspired you to become an author?

My love of stories. Seeing worlds created, be they in books or on the screen, was so fascinating to me that I wanted to do that myself.

Do you write in different genres?

Yes.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

Fantasy, but then again, all of my books have a fantastical element about them.

How did you come up with the title for your latest book?

When you remember something it’s just that, a memory. But reminiscing is a narration of the past told to yourself or to someone else.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Most often I have it from the start, but sometimes it will change as I’m writing when the story itself changes.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true-life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

Although the town of Coronado, New Mexico is fictional, I grew up in Albuquerque so much of it is based on the surrounding small towns. Oh, and I was once in a jewelry store when it was robbed.

“Slade House” by David Mitchell & the Southern Reach series by Jeff Vandermeer

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m working on a “bridge” between my nine-part series, “The Lizard Queen” and what comes next.

Interview - Waking for Winter by Katherine McIntyre

Are you currently binge watching anything on Netflix, Hulu (or elsewhere)? What keeps you glued to the screen?

I just binged Riverdale on Netflix, and I’m currently making my way through Black Sails, because OH MY GOD PIRATES. Hopefully that’s a clear display of how wildly different my tastes are. I love the superhero shows, as well as any sort of supernatural/paranormal one as well.

Do you prefer movies or TV series?

Always TV series. It’s an ongoing joke between me and my husband, because if we’re ever trying to decide what to watch, I’m rarely in a movie mood. 

(My husband and I are the same way- he likes movies, I love TV Shows  ~RR)

When it comes to reading do you prefer standalones or series?

Series. I love getting invested in characters and a brand new world that I don’t want to leave. The most recent series I got obsessed with was A Court of Thorns and Roses…to the point that I even got a quote from it tattooed on my back.

Do you prefer to start new book series when the first book is released or do you want for a several books in the series to be released so you can binge read?

Binge read. I am the most impatient person on the planet and hate waiting, so it’s usually best for me to be behind the curve so I can blow through a series and feel all the feelings while I’m along for the ride. When there are long waits for the next books in series, I sometimes lose interest and don’t finish them.

What are some of your hobbies, interests or guilty pleasures (other than reading and writing)?

I tend to go through ‘making’ phases where I learn how to make things. In the past I’ve brewed my own beer, blended tea, roasted coffee, made soap from scratch, got in-depth into cupcake baking and decorating, made herbal tinctures, lotions and lotion bars, etc. I also love cats and the Last Unicorn more than is probably healthy.

What's your guilty “nerd” pleasure?

Too many to count. I’m a huge Whedon geek (Firefly, Buffy, Dr. Horrible), and I regularly attend steampunk conventions, comic-cons, etc. When I was younger, I was anime obsessed, and over the years I’ve also played in plenty of White Wolf LARPs and table-top games (a la Dungeons and Dragons). I’m a big comic book geek as well, with Batman being one of my favorite franchises, but at the end of the day I’m a book geek first and foremost.  

Have you ever peeked at the ending of a book?

While I do it much less with my Kindle, when I had paperback books in hand, always. I used to read big epic fantasies, and I’d always peek ahead to see when the POV would switch back to the plotlines or characters I really liked too.

When it comes to your own writing are you a plotter or a panster?

Pantser, through and through. My “plot” documents would make true plotters cry. I usually jot a couple notes down. One of my most recent notes for a new story is ‘appear at ball, steal the thing’ because I haven’t even tacked down what the hell they’re stealing yet. One of the benefits of being a pantser is that I don’t tend to sabotage myself in broadcasting twists because I don’t realize they’re coming.

“Let’s drown ourselves in coffee,” she responded, turning and making a beeline toward the shop, which had just opened. A tired barista nudged her glasses up on her nose before leaning over the counter.

“Hey there,” the woman slurred, her voice thick with sleep. Cami peered into the display case while Dante swerved by her to order a plain cup of coffee. The strawberry crumb cake caught her eye at once; she loved the fruit to the point of addiction. She ordered it and a small cappuccino. Even with the barista’s yawns, she moved with a surprising efficiency, in mere moments dropping off a swirled cappuccino and the moist crumb cake while she exchanged the cash.

Dante leaned into one of the black, wire-rimmed chairs in the corner of the room, watching her with a smile that reached his eyes. She drew in a deep breath, wishing she could equip some sort of armor to disarm the magnetism of his smile and the way his gaze made her heart ache.

She took solace in her six packs of sugar to fill that hole as she stirred them into her cappuccino and carried her food over to where Dante sat.

“You’re going to get diabetes,” he commented, arching a brow at her drink.

“If sugar was going to kill me, I’d get the premonition. Might as well be some use to my shitty ability.” She fixed him with a glare before lifting her crumb cake to her lips and exaggerating her enjoyment to spite him.

Dante snorted in response.

“So,” she started in between chews. Dante lifted a brow. As rough and tumble as the necromancer appeared, he always got cranky about table manners. Which was great, because Cami relished any opportunity she got to annoy him. “When are we going investigating?” she asked, excitement winding through her system faster than caffeine. Alanna might be keeping her out of Coven field duty, but she could still do some legwork on her own. The Caoranach had already made her interest clear, so Cami wasn’t going to loiter around waiting for the next visit.

Dante took a sip from his steaming cup and shook his head with a smirk. “Thought you were an obedient good girl now.”

She shot him a look. “Dunno, I think stopping imminent evil from having its way with the city would earn me some good cred. Besides, when have I ever been obedient?”

Midsip of his coffee, Dante spluttered into the cup. Though his dark eyes glittered with amusement, his mouth grew serious. “Level with me though. Other folks can follow this lead, ones who haven’t been at this monster’s mercy. Are you okay enough to snoop around? Things could get real, fast.”

Cami sucked in a deep breath as she tugged on her pendant. The softness and care in his voice slayed her, and even if she wanted to puff her chest with bravado and pretend, she couldn’t hide her feelings for anything. “I’m scared as shit, D. I’m getting these spells where I freeze up, where my body’s paralyzed. What I’d love to do is just hibernate under my blankets for the next couple of months with Sirius and about a thousand books. But whether I like it or not, she’s taken an interest in me, and I’m connected to this. So yeah, I’ll step up to the plate.”

Interview, Excerpt and Giveaway: Divide and Conquer by Carmen Fox

What inspired you to become an author?

My nan. She liked my writing and got me started when I was younger. I simply never stopped.

Do you have a specific writing style?

Yes, or so I’m told. I tend not to use the simplest or most straight-forward sentence structure. Some readers love it, others struggle with it.

Do you write in different genres?

Just about everything I write is Urban Fantasy, but I write in different subgenres. Divide and Conquer is Urban Fantasy full of action with a healthy dose of romance.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

I’ve tried action, mystery and romance (all under the genre “Urban Fantasy”), but as long as there’s something supernatural going on, I’m your girl. I would like to try my hand at steampunk, though.

How did you come up with the title for your book?

Divide and Conquer is a play on words, as many of my titles are. Lea’s world and Nieve’s world are separated by a magical boundary called the Divide.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Normally the plot and the title go hand in hand. Sometimes I think of a title and a plot forms.

If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

Most immediately I’d say Mary Buckham, who has taught me so much over the years. Other writers I’ve learned from include Laura Baker, Anna J. Stewart, Celia Breslin… Honestly, the list is too long.

What book are you reading now?

I just bought a number of Sylvia Day books and can’t wait to get started.

What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I’m close to finishing the second book in The Silverton Chronicles. Next will be a novella about a werewolf detective.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

My current work follows on from Guarded, book 1 of my other Urban Fantasy series. It’s about a charming vampire called Florian, one of my favorite characters, and his struggle to compartmentalize his different loyalties. He’s torn between his old vampire family, his best friend, his new werewolf family and a girl he can’t get out of his head. At its heart, it’s a romance.

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yes. Read a lot and learn a lot. Many believe writing well is a talent, but regardless of your starting position, you can produce a good book if you address your weaknesses. In the beginning, I didn’t know how to create a plot that wasn’t episodic. After taking courses and learning from some amazing teachers and writers, I’m thrilled to need much less editing in this respect.

NIEVE

I dropped my magical defenses, allowing my luster to envelop me in a powerful light. Without the sun’s ready supply of energy, that meant using some of my precious resources.
