Interview with Ruby Vines

What inspired you to become an author?

When I was a sophomore in high school, a favorite English teacher pulled me aside and told me I had a spark. She encouraged me to write and follow my dreams and at the time I had no idea I’d one day be published. I’ll never forget her. She was instrumental in inspiring me.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I’m a total pantster, writing by the seat of my pants. I never know where my characters will take me. I’m always surprised but after 10 novels, I’ve never been disappointed yet. Scared, yes. Not knowing is not the most comfortable thing in the world but it sure does make the ride exciting!

Do you write in different genres?

I write in many genres. Paranormal romance, historical romance, fantasy, vintage romance, contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and children’s literature, including picture books for elementary school aged children. I blend genres within my books. I’m a total genre bending fool.

If yes which is your favorite genre to write?

Historical fiction for sure. I love history.

Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

I almost always change the title of my books or wait until something just hits me in the face one day. Usually it’s something a character says that helps decide the title. This book actually had another title. Chasing Savannah. I changed it after remembering the amazing song by Tracy Lawrence, Texas Tornado and just knew I had hit a homerun with that title since the book opens with a tornado.

Is the book, characters, or any scenes based on a true life experience, someone you know, or events in your own life?

Colt Daniels’ personality is my husband’s personality. He’s very much an alpha male and likes to tell females what to do. Not a good combo for a strong, independent female. The dialogue was pretty simple to write since it would be the same kinds of conversations I have had with my husband. Infuriating and hot at the same time. He’s the kind of man who wants to take care of you and protect you from the world but a little too controlling at times. Keeping that in check is always a challenge, just as it was for Savannah but it makes for some magical, red hot chemistry too.

Who designed the cover of your latest book?

Erin Dameron-Hill. She never ceases to surprise me. Such raw talent. Such vision. Check out her work. http://www.alishapaige.com/my-cover-artist.html

Do you have any advice for other writers?

Keep at it. Never ever give up and don’t listen to those who make fun of your “hobby” as many like to call it. You can and will make money as a writer if you want to. Write the first book and keep writing. Just write the dang book. Finish it. Use it to learn or get it polished and edited and send it out in the wild blue yonder. Write another one. And another one. Keep reading all your favorite authors and read in a variety of genres.

Do you have a song or playlist (book soundtrack) that you think represents this book?

Here's the song that inspired MY LITTLE TEXAS TORNADO. Such an amazing song by Tracy Lawrence. I first heard it when I was dating a cowboy years ago and he told me the song reminded him of me. I never forgot that song. I still love it to this day.

Book Description:

Colt Daniels is a Texas rancher known for his award winning steaks. The king rancher has known his good neighbor and vintner, Mr. Moon for years. In fact, he recommends the Moon Wines as the ideal label paired with his mouth watering steaks. When Mr. Moon dies and leaves the vineyard to his long lost niece, Savannah Moon, Colt offers to show her the ropes since the California girl is clueless, not only about Texas but about wine. Even his Southern Charm is lost on the snob who doesn't even have the decency to thank him for saving her life her first day in town.

Thing is, he ain't cut out to train someone he can't stand, even if Mr. Moon was like a grandfather to him. But there's no denying it, the Moons know how to grow 'em...wine and women. Savannah isn't a woman he can easily forget. Bitchy or not, he finds reasons to teach her about grapes, among other things. And while he's finding reasons to stomp the grapes with his new neighbor, a plan is brewing to bring the wine heiress down.
