“Don't you think you're rushing things just a tad?” She lifted her hand and pinched her index finger and thumb together for emphasis.

“I'll admit my proposal is a bit abrupt,” he stammered.

“A bit?”

“We've only known each other--”

“Forty-five minutes tops,” she blurted out. “Are you out of your mind?”

Her tone was incredulous. And he really didn't blame Maggie if she thought he was nuts. He felt nuts. Desperate, too. But he found himself defending his proposal.

“Quite possibly. But you see, that’s exactly my point. I have a bit of a time-crunch here, and it seems as though--”

Maggie folded her arms across her chest. “How silly of me. Here I thought you were sweeping me off my feet.”

He shook his head with a chuckle. “I do sound mad, don’t I?”

“Recognition is the first step toward recovery.”

Something rumbled up from deep inside him. Jonah laughed at himself, this disastrous day, and the absurd situation he'd been forced into by his grandfather. It felt good to laugh. That in itself was incredibly surprising, considering he hadn't managed to do much laughing at all since he'd learned of the impending plans for Wiltshire.

He peered at Maggie through moisture filled eyes. She wasn't laughing. But she was incredibly beautiful. Her sapphire eyes sparkled when she teased him. There were small freckles sprinkled across her nose that looked adorable with the sun shining on her creamy skin.

When she looked at him the way she was right now, it didn't seem like such a crazy idea to marry her. At least not for the reasons he was proposing. He hadn't given it a second thought. And yet, now he realized just how ridiculous he looked from her eyes.

“I'm not making a pass at you. Truly, I'm not.”

“You just asked me to marry you.”

“I'm asking for your help.”

“Again?”

His lips tilted up to one side. “Again.”

Maggie took two steps down the stairs until they were both standing at eye level. “Forget the phone call, the nice air conditioned ride in the limo, the coffee, the pie—”

“Which by the way was truly inspiring,” he interjected. “If I didn’t already tell you that.”

“You did. You don't even know me. You’re asking a total stranger to marry you.”

He shrugged. “I know that. But I know you make me laugh.”

“So that's all it takes for a happy marriage? Bet we could make a killing with that book.”

“I sound delusional,” he said. “Even to my own ears, which is pretty scary.”

He was delusional. He'd just asked a woman he didn't even know to marry him! And the fact that he was truly considering it was entirely grandfather's doing.

This was my first opportunity to read a work by Roxanne Rhoads and it was like they say...."Worth the wait." It was extremely well written and crafted. You are transported into each story. This anthology is completely unlike any other I have ever read. It's amazing and mind blowingly HOT! Roxanne Rhoads has compiled these ten titillating tales that definitely get your blood pumping. Each story is designed to excite and fulfill your cravings. Every supernatural fantasy you have ever had exists in this book and maybe more.

You get stories from all points of view and position. It excelled past every expectation I had. There weren't any lulls in the stories nor downtime, which I truly appreciated. It is full of action, emotion and trysts. And I love conflicted turned on characters!

Normally, I never read a book more than once. I feel the shine has worn off and it sits on a shelf. However, this anthology is one I will eagerly sink my teeth into over and over again. Pleasure awaits and desire abounds on every page. I had no idea Flint, Michigan could be so hot! Lesson learned. I cannot wait to read more of Roxanne's books!

My advice? Leave your inhibitions and perhaps even your clothing on the floor, pick up this book and savor every moment!

Excerpt Chapter One

The water rippled, sending whispers to her on its waves. She bent low toward the glistening liquid, listening, straining hard to hear the words the water wanted her to know. There was a truth there, she was certain of it.

On hands and knees, she settled her face just above the lake waters. Maybe if she submersed herself, her face at least, she could hear the whispers clearer. She had to know what the water was trying to tell her. Lives, she was certain, depended on it.

Slowly, she pushed her face into the water, her eyes open, alert, ready for anything. Because she knew there was something in the lake. There always had been.

She waited, her lungs bursting for air. The urge to open her mouth to take in oxygen ripped at her brain.

Finally, another set of ripples came from some movement in the water. As they undulated over her flesh, into her ears, she made out three words.

I.Am.Lost.

Kirsten Morgan jolted straight up from her sleep. Sweat shellacked her tank top to her back.
It also dotted her forehead and upper lip. It was always that way after one of her dreams.

Sunlight streamed through the bedroom window. It was early yet. Too early on a normal day to be awake.

She swung her legs over her bed, and sat up, setting her head in her hands. The smell of copper still lingered in her nose. It wasn’t the scent of blood but something else.

Her head throbbed something fierce, as if something inside was getting ready to burst open. That probably wasn’t too far from the reality of her situation.

She rubbed her face with her hands, and held her head up, blinking to get her bearings. She’d drunk a lot of martinis last night. But she wasn’t normally one for hangovers. No, her unease and queasiness came from elsewhere.

Movement behind her on the bed made her flinch. She glanced over her shoulder to see Josh, her man for the month, rolling over to look at her. He traced a finger over her bare back.

“It’s barely six. Why are you up?”

“I got to go.”

She stood, punctuating her statement, and crossed the room to gather clothes from the dresser. Her clothes from the night before were strewn every which way. A morning chill raised the goose flesh on her arms and legs. She glanced down, realizing she was completely naked. She reached for the silk robe draped over her dressing chair and slid it on.

“Where are you going? I didn’t think you had an upcoming appearance. You said you were free for the next few days.”

“Yeah, well, that’s changed.”

Kirsten pulled open drawers and yanked out some underwear, T-shirts, jeans and various other garments. She tossed them onto the bed, then moved to her closet. She slid open the door and grabbed the suitcase buried in the corner. She put that on the bed as well.

Frowning, Josh sat up. “What’s the suitcase for?”

“I told you I had to go.”

“I thought you meant for the day. Not for a holiday.”

She unzipped the suitcase and piled her clothes inside. As well as shoes and boots, and a couple of jackets. “This is not a holiday.” She packed hurriedly, the urgency to leave making her jumpy.

“Jesus, Kirsten, what the hell is going on?”

“Look, Josh, you’re great and it’s been fun, but I’m leaving town for a while. Maybe we can hook up when I get back.”

“When will that be?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. A week maybe. Two at the most.”

He grabbed her hands before she could shove more clothes into the bag. “Hold up. What the hell is going on? Did I do something wrong?”

“This isn’t about you, okay? I have to go somewhere. It’s important.”

He let her go and sat back. “Is it your work?”

Sighing, Kirsten nodded. “Yeah.” It was always her work that drove her from her bed, drove her from other people, from places that she’d temporarily called home. It was her work that sent her traveling around the world, involving herself in other people’s tragic lives.

Her head was still killing her and she rubbed at her right temple. If she was going to make it there in one piece, she’d need to take some painkillers before she got on a plane. The air pressure would be too much on an already pressurized brain.

“Where are you going? Can you tell me that much?”

She zipped up her suitcase, and set it on the floor. Sweat was trickling down her back. She wasn’t sure she was even ready to go. But, she knew without a doubt where the dream was telling her to go. She knew that water, she knew that coppery odor.

“Bandit Creek, Montana. I’m going home.”

When she arrived at the foot of the stairs, the front door rattled. Fear, cold and stark, rose up in her throat and choked her as she heard the lock snap and watched, rooted to the floor, the creaky old door jiggle in its frame. The anticipation mingled with fright, produced a potent, sick feeling churning inside her like the bad horror movie she’d recently viewed on late-night cable television.

After what seemed an eternity, the door flung open. The first thought entering her brain was a ghost had entered her home. A younger, blonder visage of Morgan stood in the threshold. Before she could utter his name, a second, more coherent thought followed; a ghost wouldn’t use a key.

The man in the doorway took one step inside and stopped abruptly, clenched his jaw, and stared. The familiar stranger invading her new home could only be one person.

“My goodness, you’re Ben! You’re Morgan’s son!” she exclaimed.

“Well, we know who I am. Now who the hell are you, and why are you trespassing in my house?”

“Your house?” she asked with disbelief. “This is my home. Morgan gave it to me!”

“I don’t know who you are, lady, but I suggest you get a move on it. I’ll give you five minutes before I call the police.” He pointed to his platinum-cased wristwatch for emphasis.

“Don’t bother waiting.” She reached into her handbag and removed her cell phone. With shaking fingers, she punched in 911.

The line connected after the second ring. “911, what is your emergency?” asked the female dispatcher.

“My name is Josselyn Adler. I’m the new owner of 22 Little Pine Road. A man has let himself into my home and is now threatening me.” Although she was quaking on the inside, she strove to keep her voice and demeanor strong and confident.

“I have an officer on the way, Ms. Adler. Would you like to stay on the line with me until he arrives?” she offered.

“No, thank you. I’ll be fine,” she assured her.

As she disconnected her phone, Ben’s gaze burned into her. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of showing any fear. While growing up, she had dealt with her share of tormentors. One forty-year-old, blond-haired bully was not going to intimidate her or drive her from a home that was rightfully hers.

“Very nice performance,” he said snidely.

“Excuse me?” She furrowed her brow and made eye contact. Ben Parnell had his father’s glacial, blue eyes.

“Any moment one of Unity’s finest will be arriving to play knight in shining armor and save the poor maiden from the big, bad wolf.”

Before she could utter a word in reply, a black patrol car came to a screeching halt on the street. An officer threw open the car door and made long, quick strides to the house. His uniform and Unity Police Department baseball cap matched the color of his car.

A lump formed in her throat. As she was growing up, a police car in front of the house and an officer at the door meant her father was in some sort of trouble yet again.

“Good evening, Miss. I’m Officer Smith.” He looked to Ben. “It’s certainly been a long time since you’ve been around, Ben.” Not waiting for an answer from him, he turned his attention back to Josselyn. “What seems to be the problem tonight?”

He knew Ben by his first name. They looked to be about the same age, and in this small town, it was likely they knew each other growing up. Although Officer Smith seemed friendly enough, would he side with the hometown boy rather than with the stranger girl?

“This is my house. Morgan Parnell left it to me in his will. Now he...” She paused and pointed at Ben. “He thinks it’s his house.”

“I have a will, too,” Ben loudly interrupted. “And mine is legitimate!”

His deep voice vibrated through her, causing her head to ache. Flustered, she pulled an envelope from her handbag. Morgan’s attorney gave to her a copy of the will a few days earlier. She handed it to Officer Smith. To her dismay, Ben also produced a document from a briefcase.

This is very bad.

She hoped Ben had been bluffing.

For funsies: 10 things about Elizabeth Reyes

1. I'm considerably tall for a woman about 5'9 and I love wearing HIGH heels. Though I don't so much lately. But I used to do the Valerie thing when I was younger BIG shoes! Good thing my husband is 6'3. =)

2. I chew my nails. *sigh* a habit I've sadly never been able to break out of.

3. I love to sing. Yep karaoke is a good friend of mine.

4 . Like in so many of my stories I married my first love. And we're still together after almost 18 years.Unlike most of my stories we've NEVER broken up. Not even for a day. And yes ladies he is an alpha through and through. =)

5. My first job was a cashier at Kmart. My first real (and by real I mean I was counting on it to pay the bills) 411 operator for the phone company. "What city please?" lol

6. I own and love Great Danes. And yes Diesel was the name of my first one. He's passed now =( but now we have Dexter.

7. In case none of you have guessed it by now. I have quite the potty mouth. Writing Manny and Max's and Romero's dialogue was much easier for me than you guys would imagine. In fact toning down the language in my books is actually harder for me. =/

8. I LOVE the holidays! And I mean LOOOOVE the baking, cooking, decorating, shopping, wrapping, playing the songs, choosing the perfect tree you name it. I'm always a little down in January every year when it's all over. =(

9. You may have noticed my characters are always grubbing. (just wait for MYM!) That's because I loveto cook. Most of the dishes mentioned in my books are some of my specialties. =)

10. I'm a tree nerd. BIG time. I have a half acre backyard and I love spending time out there planting more and more trees. =)

The Height of the Last Florida Real Estate Boom

A faded gray Buick clunker idled in the winding drive. Palm trees whipped by the wind blowing off Sarasota Bay cast tentacle-like shadows across its chassis.

The plump young night nurse slipped out of the house by the side door. She hadn't dared leave until she was certain her patient was asleep but, having heard the deep, even snores, she felt confident that the amply medicated old lady would be unconscious at least until daybreak.

Enid Parker's bones had gone brittle and her muscles had atrophied, making it impossible for her to do much beyond lie in her bed if she did awaken. Her hair, long since leached of all color, had thinned to baby fine strands. As senile and infirm as she was though, Enid could still make a ruckus when she felt ignored. The nurse had earned several screeches of complaint over the past three evenings, which was how long she'd been employed as Enid Parker's caregiver. She was glad for the work and accustomed to difficult patients so she didn't consider turning down the assignment even after learning that an earlier nurse had walked off the job in the middle of the night, blithering incomprehensibly. Some other nurses simply couldn't hack it, she knew, but she didn't have much sympathy for them. Handling the job, where crotchety old folks were concerned, meant sucking it up when they heaved verbal abuse, not just parceling out the pills at the appropriate hours or cleaning up the messes from their saggy bottoms to their soiled linens.

But now that the old woman slept, she saw no reason to lurk in the creaky old house through the night.

She darted to the car, swung her wide hips onto the passenger seat, and quietly pulled the door closed behind her. The young man at the wheel put his sputtering vehicle in gear, drove it past the decorative iron gate and on toward the outside world. She'd be back in plenty of time with no one the wiser.

Despite enough medication to sedate a Clydesdale horse, Enid Parker did not rest easily. Moments after her nurse's departure, her creped eyelids fluttered open.

"Papa?" she murmured. "Are we going to the circus? Can I ride the elephant? You promised."

Not getting an answer, she reached out tentatively with one arthritic hand, as if attempting to see through her fingertips. Wispy white eyebrows bunched together as clouded pupils strained to focus.

Then anger sparked in those dull eyes.

"Lucinda!" she shrieked. "You get out of here. Get out. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE. My house ..." Her heart accelerated, pumping blood through tired veins and arteries, tingling her desiccated skin to an almost healthy pink.

Forgetting her infirmity, Enid forced herself upright, determined to eject the intruder.

The effort exhausted what little life was left in her.

Going out on a date: Yes we all go thought the same difficulties of what to wear, the wardrobe will not shut but I still do not have anything suitable, so after hours of searching in the end I decide to wear black as it will match my comfy shoes, ok so I have more shoes than a dictators wife but only one comfy pair and they are black, why comfy shoes? Well I have no idea where we are going so what the heck should I wear!

Now comes the date bag, why can’t a girl just go out, and when I say a girl I mean me, why do I have to look like I’m going for a 10 day vacation and not just a night out.

So let’s open the date bag and check if everything is there.

3. Packet of mints for after eating smelly food….er…………foreigners

8. Sun glasses, hat and 100% sun block just in case you stay out early.

9. A spare pair of panties in case I sleep over ……… er not that I am planning to sleep over … er forget it ok! Look I said stop giggling and forget it!!!!

10. Precautions and protection, nowadays it is not just a boys reasonability for protection and so a girl should also take her own protection if needed, personally I take a can of Mace and a 10 inch kitchen knife and if that fails I sink my teeth into the neck!

The Real:………… Amy Mah

Ok you want to know about me? Well I am a little older than my Vampire self which you first meet when she is 16, and I am in my 20s.

Are Ghosts As Real as We Are?

My belief is that our souls, our spirits make us who we are. Once the spirit/soul leaves the body the body is just an empty shell. The essence is gone on to wherever it is spirits go- heaven, hell, limbo, or perhaps stuck in this world unseen and unheard by the living.

With this belief in mind I would think that on one level a ghost is just as real as a living, breathing person they just no longer have a shell around them. When I say real I mean a conscious, feeling entity.

I do understand that some spirits are not conscious, they are more of an imprint, a memory locked on replay tied to a place or thing- the same image, the same thing happens over and over again. And then there are spirits that are not human, that were never human to begin with but that’s a whole different ball park than what I’m talking about now.

I’m talking about your basic ghost. Someone dies, the spirit leaves the body but for whatever reason does not cross over. It’s here, still conscious, still feeling, still aware but not tied to a physical body. Can we say that the spirit is not worth considering, that the spirit does not matter?

I question this because the point was brought up in an amazing book I just finished, Sparks by Laura Bickle. Her character, Anya, believes that ghosts- spirits matter. That their feelings should be taken into consideration. A few people in her ghost hunting group think otherwise. It’s not something that gets resolved within the book but it is a great discussion point and something to ponder.

If we are who we are because of a soul and our soul leaves our body when we die and moves on to become a spirit- then how can anyone who believes in a soul believe that the spirit that it becomes irrelevant?

It’s something to think about isn’t it?

My story, A Halloween to Remember, features a ghost. Dimitri is the spirit of a man who died before his dream could become reality. This ties him to his house so he is unable to cross over. But no one ever sees him. Not until Adena attends a Halloween party in the home he built- and Halloween magic allows her to see and feel him.

Many of my stories feature vampires not ghosts but many consider vampires to be soulless- so would that make them less likely to have rights even though they have a physical body?

One line I read in the book Sparks said something similar to “their rights end at death”.

According to a lot of vampire legends vampires are dead- or undead. So even though they are up and walking around do they not have rights, feelings, emotions to be considered?

It’s something to ponder when reading or writing paranormal fiction and urban fantasy- in the laws of a world that recognizes the existence of paranormal creatures what rights under law should they have?

What feelings should we consider when making choices about/for them?

Do rights and feelings end at death?

If they existed in our world should sentient ghosts, vampires, werewolves and Other paranormals have the same rights as normal humans?

Do you believe in the magic of stories?

I’m not asking if you believe in magic wands, pixie dust, or bunny holes that can transport you to Wonderland. What I’m asking is do you believe in the magic of stories themselves? I’m not asking if you believe in the magic of Harry Potter, Tinkerbell, and the White Rabbit. What I’m asking is if you believe in the magic of J.K. Rowling, James M. Barrie, Lewis Carroll.

I believe in that kind of magic. Stories, after all, have transported me to other worlds. They’ve allowed me the opportunity to experience lives different from my own. They’ve let me see things from different points of view. And they made me care about, cry for, laugh with, and fall in love with people I could not have met any other way. Stories have moved me and made me think. They’ve made me see things about my own life and my own world that I’ve never noticed before.

What’s that if not magic?

In my new book, Toren the Teller’s Tale, the main character becomes an apprentice to a wizard who wants her to learn the greatest magic of their world:

My master leaned in close again and began to teach me my first true lesson. “When you think of magic, you think of wizards and witches. You might also think of dragons. But that is only half of what magic is. Magic is everywhere to some degree.”

He pointed at the wares of the vendors around us. “There is magic in the artistry that made that cloth over there: magic in the dyes that created the colors, the fingers that worked the loom. There is magic in those candles and in the glass. All of this magic can be wielded by one who holds the power. You have a great deal of power already in you, but you must learn how to use it.

“It isn’t enough to learn spells and how to make potions. You must learn how to read the magic in everything. You must learn to tell the story of the dye and the fingers, the candle, and the glass. The ultimate magic is the story that doesn’t merely describe the thing, but is the thing. If you read something until you know it completely--every bit of its magic, every part of its story--then you will be able to retell that story in a single, unspoken word called a Shemet. Tell its Shemet, and it is yours not only to shape and bend but also to create from nothing.

“This ultimate power became lost when the magic of our world was shattered about eight hundred years ago. It is written that in the Age of Magic the power of wizards and witches was so great they shined as brightly as the sun. Today we are no more than scarcely glowing embers.” Here he paused and looked deeply into my eyes. The expression on his face was earnest. “I believe, however, the old magic can, and must, rise again. The evil magic in our world--that devastating wind--is gathering its strength too, and we must take action to bring it down.”

He took the amulet on the chain around my neck, pressed it into my palm, and folded my fingers around it. “We wizards and witches brandish magic. But we have become so obsessed with its symbols--the potions and the spells--that we have forgotten what the source of our highest power is: the reading and retelling of the Shemet. I need you to learn all the magic there is to learn. To do that you must learn everything. Above all, you must learn from those who are closest to the source of this magic, those who hold the power of the telling.”

My master stepped aside and gestured toward the storyteller, who had now finished his performance. First came a brief silence. Then sighs of pleasure, cheers, and clapping followed, and the audience dispersed. Some wiped away tears, while others chatted. All were smiling. My master took me by the arm and led me to the man . . .

I believe it’s the greatest magic of our world too.

'Twas a Dark and Delicious Christmas by Stacey Espino

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a good collection of Christmas stories with a paranormal twist- though I must admit several were very dark. I see where the dark came into play. But if you're looking for Christmas tales that aren't all warm and fluffy give this one a go.

Great vampire Christmas antho. I think my favorite was Monsters Don;t Do Christmas- but all of them were great reads. If you want a little fang in your holiday reading you must pick this book up. You'll love it.

Now these weren't exactly hardcore steampunk stories but they were great reads. If you want tomrance, historical settings and a little steampunk flair you'll like this collection.

This was a varied collection. All three tales were vastly different.

I of course loved the vampire one best but was left wondering if there's more to these characters. It seemed maybe this was taken out of a series because there was so much left open in a way that made me feel as a reader I should know what was going on from reading a previous book. And though it was set at Christmas time, Christmas wasn't really the focus like I wanted it to be.

It was an entertaining read though- also a little wicked.

Great little story. I love that the character had a lot to overcome on her own and that she made it.

This made me want to read Royce's other wolf books- a lot.

Kissing Under the Mistletoe Tips with Rachel Firasek

Okay, let's have some fun!

In the spirit of Christmas and my fave tradition--kissing under the mistletoe--I thought we'd talk about getting ready for that moment, and my precautions...er preperations for a perfect smooch.

1. Always...Always, brush teeth after stuffing your face with the rows of heaping carbs that you'll have to walk off later.

2. Be sure that underarms are b.o. free and if you're traveling, it wouldn't hurt to spritz the air freshener and walk through the mist--just to give you that fresh scent he'll love.

3. Do a tongue check against now clean teeth to make sure no little pieces of turkey are stuck in between the molars you'd like him to lick later.

4. Remove any excess lipstick that might be a deter for him. Guys are tricky and will use any excuse in the book to avoid kissing a woman they've spent the last decade or two with--if you're still in the passionate days, you can skip this part. He'll mostly dry hump you in the living room in front of your folks if the relationship is early enough.

5. Don't forget the girls. Pull them puppies up and plump them until they look like two pillows he'd like to lay his head on. When he goes in for the inspection, lock on baby! *Muuuuwaaaa*

So, this is my fail proof plan to get my guy to lock down on my love lickers. Do you have one to add? I'd love to know. *smooches*
