Interview with Jessica Gibson

1       What book are you reading now?

It’s called The Demon Lover by Juliet Dark, really enjoying it so far.

2       What books are in your to read pile?

Oh, I have so many in that pile lol. The next book up to be read is Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning, my friends have been bugging me to read this series.

3       What is your current “work in progress” or upcoming projects?

I generally work on a few books at a time. Right now I’m working on my YA book Haunted U, and also getting my vampire book Love and Blood ready to Publish next month.

4       Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? For me it’s love scenes lol. They always give me anxiety, probably because I know that my family will read it.

5       Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?

I love Diana Gabaldon, she combines the perfect amount of love story and historical fiction to her books.

6       Who designed the cover of your latest book?

Russ Turner Photography designed the cover for Mark of the Witch and also Chasing the Witch. He got my vision so completely.

7       Do you have any advice for other writers?

Yes, never give up! IT gets hard sometimes, but remember that you’re doing it for you and no one else. Also, invest in a good editor, and a cover artist. Your cover will sell your book, and poor editing will get you bad reviews.

8       Do you title the book first or wait until after it’s complete?

Usually I get about halfway into a book before I give it a title. I like to get to know my characters before I give the book its name.

The Romance Novel Cover Guest Blog by Lisa Mondello

The Romance Novel Cover by Lisa Mondello

The old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” is widely known.  Unfortunately, a book cover is one of the most important tools publishers and self-published authors use to help attract readers.  It’s the first thing readers see and, other than the title, is the only reason a reader chooses to pick up your book from the shelf to read the back cover, or click on the book at an online retailer to see more.

A romance novel book cover is nearly as important as the story itself and, in terms of marketing the novel, is really more important.  Many “okay” books sell well because the book has a fabulous cover that attracts readers.  Likewise, a book with a bland cover or a cover that doesn’t reflect the tone of the book, may fade in the background of other books, never to be picked up or read.  It may be the next Twilight phenomenon, but no one will ever know because the cover failed.

So, the million dollar question is this.  What makes a winning romance novel book cover?  I know what works for me.  I have to admit I like the shirtless hero.  I know some people don’t like it.  But I do.  And I love to see the hero and heroine kissing on the cover or in a hot embrace.

For romantic suspense covers, there is always the woman in jeopardy, i.e. girl on the run cover that works.  It conveys the message and immediately intrigues me.

But, I’d love to know what works for readers.  What type of book cover makes you take a second look at a book?
